Gravity waves , representing ripples in the fabric of spacetime, have now been directly observed. So, yes spacetime can be warped. That year, Miguel Alcubierre wrote down a solution to the basic equations of GR that represented a region that compressed spacetime ahead of it and expanded spacetime behind to create a kind of traveling warp bubble.

This was really good news for warp drive fans. There were some problems though. These are things theorists dreamed up to stick into the GR equations in order to do cool things like make stable open wormholes or functioning warp drives. On one side, there is the shape of spacetime, and on the other, there is the configuration of matter-energy.

The traditional route with these equations is to start with a configuration of matter-energy and see what shape of spacetime it produces. But you can also go the other way around and assume the shape of spacetime you want like a warp bubble and determine what kind of configuration of matter-energy you will need even if that matter-energy is the dream stuff of negative energy.

Warp drives are simpler and much less mysterious objects than the broader literature has suggested. What Bobrick and Martre did was step back and look at the problem more generally. They showed how all warp drives were composed of three regions: an interior spacetime called the passenger space; a shell of material, with either positive or negative energy, called the warping region; and an outside that, far enough away, looks like normal unwarped spacetime.

In this way they could see exactly what was and was not possible for any kind of warp drive. Watch this lovely explainer by Sabine Hossenfelder for more details.

They even showed that you could use good old normal matter to create a warp drive that, while it moved slower than light speed, produced a passenger area where time flowed at a different rate than in the outside spacetime. So even though it was a sub-light speed device, it was still an actual warp drive that could use normal matter. General Relativity states that space and time are fused and that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. General relativity also describes how mass and energy warp spacetime — hefty objects like stars and black holes curve spacetime around them.

Early science fiction writers John Campbell and Asimov saw this warping as a way to skirt the speed limit. What if a starship could compress space in front of it while expanding spacetime behind it? In , Miguel Alcubierre, a Mexican theoretical physicist, showed that compressing spacetime in front of the spaceship while expanding it behind was mathematically possible within the laws of General Relativity. So, what does that mean? Imagine the distance between two points is 10 meters 33 feet.

If you are standing at point A and can travel one meter per second, it would take 10 seconds to get to point B. Then, moving through spacetime at your maximum speed of one meter per second, you would be able to reach point B in about one second.

In theory, this approach does not contradict the laws of relativity since you are not moving faster than light in the space around you. Proxima Centauri here we come, right? The warp drive would require either negative mass — a theorized type of matter — or a ring of negative energy density to work. Physicists have never observed negative mass, so that leaves negative energy as the only option.

To create negative energy, a warp drive would use a huge amount of mass to create an imbalance between particles and antiparticles. For example, if an electron and an antielectron appear near the warp drive, one of the particles would get trapped by the mass and this results in an imbalance.

This imbalance results in negative energy density. But for a warp drive to generate enough negative energy, you would need a lot of matter.

Others may require you apply as though you are an entirely new student. Students accepted under academic renewal can have their failing grades removed from their transcript and get a clean slate.

Most schools require students to have been out of school for a range of one to five years to qualify for this. Everyone knows the classic or common symptoms of pregnancy: tender breasts, missed period, morning sickness, feeling tired, etc. But some pregnant women experience a host of other symptoms that are not-so-common and are unexpected too such as saliva build-up in the mouth. Excess saliva in the mouth is a rare symptom of early pregnancy and is usually experienced by those pregnant women who have morning sickness. Saliva build-up in early pregnancy is medically termed as ptyalism gravidarum.

Yes, it is perfectly normal to salivate a lot more than usual during pregnancy. Usually, the glands that produce saliva tend to generate approximately ml to 1 litre of saliva in an entire day. We know, that seems like a large amount, but it goes unnoticed since we constantly keep swallowing it throughout the day.

However, during pregnancy, if a woman has excess saliva in her mouth, it could be because of increased saliva production or decreased swallowing tendency or a combination of both. A few pregnant women may salivate intensely when they are nauseous.

The saliva in such cases can make one feel like spitting it out. Some women may believe that excess saliva could be an early pregnancy symptom. However, excess production of saliva starts around the 2nd or 3rd week of the pregnancy and settles down around the end of the first trimester.

For certain women, this condition continues throughout the pregnancy and up until the delivery. The problem of excessive saliva in the mouth is not serious and you need not worry about the same.

But there are certain things that you can try to lessen the production of saliva in your mouth. As much as one would like to know how to stop excessive saliva during pregnancy, unfortunately, there are no precautions, no habits, no known techniques that can help reduce the saliva production. In the meantime, try chewing sugarless gum or using mouthwash to help keep both saliva and nausea under control. Changing hormone levels—the culprit behind most pregnancy symptoms—can increase blood flow to your nostrils and leave your gums feeling swollen and sensitive, especially during the second trimester. In a recent study, Dutch researchers found that bleeding gums are one of the most common oral changes pregnant women face.

The instinct to clean and reorganize—called nesting—is also common in birds, cats and dogs. By week 20, many women notice their hair and nails seem to be growing faster than usual. Your hair might even feel thicker because not as much is falling out every day. Higher estrogen levels and increased blood circulation are the root of this symptom because they provide extra nutrients to the hair and nails.

People experience liver pain in many different ways. Some experience it as shoulder pain, while others feel pain near the bra line, or have serious heartburn that does not respond to antacids. Preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome are dangerous pregnancy complications that can be life-threatening for both the woman and baby.

These issues need prompt medical attention. If a woman has preeclampsia, a doctor may recommend early delivery if the benefits outweigh the risks. If symptoms such as high blood pressure do not go away, the woman may need to take blood pressure medications after the birth.

A doctor will often carry out a physical examination to help them diagnose the cause of rib pain. Depending on the stage of the pregnancy, the doctor is likely to monitor the fetus for a short while to make sure that their heart rate is consistent. If a doctor suspects a UTI or another infection or condition, they may request a urine sample. If they are still not sure what is causing the pain, they may order a blood test. Some rib pain may be an unavoidable consequence of the baby pressing against or kicking the ribs.

Gentle exercise can also often combat pregnancy-related pains. The treatment for rib pain depends on the cause. For example, women with a UTI can take antibiotics to treat the infection. If gallstones are the issue, a woman may need surgery to remove them after delivery. Like many aches and pains during pregnancy, rib pain is normal and usually not a cause for concern. If the pain occurs alongside other symptoms, such as fever, high blood pressure, or spots before the eyes, a woman should see her doctor as soon as possible.

Preeclampsia is a condition that can occur during pregnancy when a woman's blood pressure rises sharply. Here are four exercises to combat rib pain. Sit in a chair. Place your left arm on your desk, the left armrest, or rest it on your belly. Reach your right arm long overhead and inhale.

On the exhale, reach further and bend to the left, gently stretching your right side. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side. Perform this two times on each side. Start on your hands and knees in a tabletop pose. Gently slide the right hand through the opening between the left hand and left knee.
